The Northumberland coast feels wonderfully remote, yet a car is not essential if you build the route around the East Coast Main Line and the coastal bus.
When to go
Late May, June and early September usually offer long days and workable bus schedules.
A route that works
- Day one: base yourself in Alnmouth, walk the estuary and take the bus to Alnwick for the castle and Barter Books.
- Day two: travel north to Craster, walk the coast path beneath Dunstanburgh Castle and continue to Embleton.
- Day three: use an early bus to Bamburgh, then continue to Seahouses for harbour views or a pre-booked wildlife boat.
Where to base yourself
Alnmouth makes the easiest rail base. Craster and Bamburgh are more atmospheric but require closer attention to bus times.
Getting around
Book an Advance train to Alnmouth. Save the latest Arriva and Travelsure timetables offline because signal can be uneven.
Food and reservations
Carry water and a snack on coast-path days, then plan a pub lunch after the walk rather than before it.
Practical note: The coast is exposed. Pack a light waterproof even on bright mornings and leave extra time between rural bus connections.
